Lane Edwards-Brown

Heya! I'm Lane, an artist located in Middle Earth/New Zealand. I've always had a deep passion for creature and character design, something that's driven me to spend just about all my free time working on improving my ability to translate my ideas to reality. I'm always looking to step into paid work, be it small commissions or larger projects, so I can pursue my passions professionally.

Traditional Inks

While I enjoy the many advantages of digital art, I still make ample use of traditional tools to create more complex pieces. These pieces are typically made at an A3 size which allows me to add as much detail as possible. For shading/colouring, most of my traditional work uses stippling, a time-consuming process that is nonetheless well worth it, creating effects that stand out from other artists.

Miscellaneous Digital Art - Complex

Below is a collection of miscellaneous digital art made in more complex, lineart heavy styles. These works cover a wide variety of topics but are often architectural in nature thanks to my prior experience working with architectural drawing and 3D CAD tools. These pieces also include fanworks for a varied number of different properties.

Character Design Work

In many of my works, especially including comic works, I've been required to design characters. Rather than simply approaching the issue as whatever first comes to mind, an effort has to be put into intentionally designing characters to fulfil the role they need to play in the story itself. Below is a number of examples of design sheets for various characters.

Darkest Dunegon Fan Work

The indie game Darkest Dungeon, a roguelike dungeon crawler, is well known for its unique and dark art style inspired by the likes of Mike Mignola. As a fan of both the game Darkest Dungeon and Mike Mignola's work, I've developed techniques to mimic the work of the games art director Chris Bourassa which has been used in a mod of my own design, the Devilbird.

3D Animation

In addition to my 2D work, I particularly enjoy 3D animation. While my modelling skills are still fledgeling, I make ample use of existing models in order to produce my own custom animations. In addition, I've taken to modelling, texturing, and rigging more grotesque figures and creating my own animations with those models, utilising the full suite of Blender's toolset.

Iconography / Minimalism

While much of my art involves a lot of heavy detailing and lineart, I also enjoy exploring other styles of art. These pieces of iconography use minimal or no lineart, a limited colour palette, and are composed entirely of simple shapes and angles in order to explore a complex space/idea with as little information as possible to explore character concepts representationally.

Random Pixel Generation

A short experiment in character creation, these characters were all created from 7x7 sprites that were created using a random pixel generator. This software produced random assortments of pixels with a given resolution and number of colours - these characters and their backstory were then developed on the fly into the characters shown below.

Pixel Art & Portraits

Pixel art is commonly used in many games, especially in the independent scene, and is a style I've often experimented in. A number of these pieces are inspired by the work of Paul Veer, with some others make as a homage to the late 90s era of Pokemon sprite art. Several of these larger sprites feature original character designs from a total-conversion mod project from many years ago.

Miscellaneous Digital Art - Cute

Below is a collection of miscellaneous digital art made in more colourful, cartoony art styles. The use of styles that rely more on simple forms allows me to better bring in colour and animation to my work as well as introduce a greater variety of content and sources that wouldn't match as well with my more complex, grittier art styles.
